The Royal Cenotaphs, Devikund Sagar, Bikaner

Devikund Sagar is the cremation ground of Bikaner Royal family. Here stand two groups of Cenotaphs (Chhattris) built in the memory of kings, queens and members of the Bikaner royal family. The earliest cenotaph is of Rao Kalyanmal, the ruler of Bikaner from 1542-71 A.D. and the last cenotaph is of Maharaja Karni Singh (1950-88A.D.) The cenotaphs of the earlier rulers of Bikaner are in Dulmera red stone and the later ones are made of marble. Among these memorials, the cenotaph of Maharaja Anup Singh (1669-98A.D.) is a marvelous piece of art and architecture. It stands on 16 pillars and bears carvings depicting acts of Lord Krishna, floral patterns, peacocks and other birds and animals. The tradition of painting the cenotaphs began with Maharaja Ratan Singh and the same is evident in his cenotaph. Some of the cenotaphs also have epigraphic memorial stones. Cenotaphs (Chhattris) play an important role in Rajput as well as in Muslim art. These Cenotaphs (Chhattris) are finest examples of architectural exuberance and ornamentation in classical Mughal taste.

Lalgarh Palace

Lalgarh Palace was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the year 1902 in memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh Ji. The red sandstone construction is a stupendous example of the architectural brilliance of the past. Mughal, Rajput and European architectures blend excellently well. The massive lawns houses peacocks, which are a sight to watch when they dance.

The palace was built between 1902 and 1926 according to Rajput, Mughal and European architectural styles, being largely in the Indo-Saracenic style. The building was commissioned by the British-controlled regency[1] for Maharaja Ganga Singh (1881–1942) while he was still in his minority as they considered the existing Junagarh Palace unsuitable for a modern monarch. Ganga Singh decided that the palace should be named in memory of his father Maharaja Lall Singh.

In 1972, Karni Singh, M.P., the Maharaja of Bikaner, established the Ganga Singhji Charitable Trust. The Maharaja endowed a part of Lallgarh Palace to be used in service of the trust. Two wings were converted into independent hotels with the income from The Lallgarh Palace Hotel, a heritage hotel used to support the trust. Currently, Lallgarh Palace is owned, and the hotel is run, by his daughter Princess Rajyashree Kumari.

Junagarh Fort

                                                              Junagarh Fort

The Junagarh fort is a unique illustration of composite culture. The fort reflects its architecture design; the first of the old one is the Rajput style of the sixteenth century, which was under the impact of the Gujarati and Mughal architectural designs. The rulers of Bikaner were in close association with the Mughal court, as such, they adopted the Mughal decorations, which reflect in the stucco, wall paintings and stone inlay works. The mosaic stone carving and lattice works reflect the Gujarati impact. The works relating to glass, lacquer and wooden ceiling, suggest various activities of the period. The confluence of Rajput, Mughal and the Gujarati architectural designs are clearly visible in Junagarh Fort, as a consequence it is one of the precious gems of Indian architecture. The most important looking and magnificent post medieval building, the Junagarh Fort has the finest lacquer work of rarity, reflecting to glorious past.

The second is the semi-western style of architecture which mostly evolved during the reign of Maharaja Dungar Singh (1872-87). His period marks the disintegration of the old style of architecture.

And third is known as revivalists Rajput architecture which evolved especially during the rule of Maharaja Ganga Singh (1887-1943). This is reflected in the new throne room known as Vikram Vilas built in 1936-37 by Maharaja Ganga Singh. The Maharaja was a great exponent of revivalists Rajput architecture, which is fully reflected in Vikram Vilas. In its grandeur and proportions, the Vikram Vilas is extremely beautiful; and its exquisite craftsmanship and artistic ability are unparalleled.

Junagarh Fort was constructed in the year 1593 by Raja Rai Singh. It is believed that crocodiles were bred in the water moat surrounding the formidable fort. The construction is a fine blend of Mughal, Gujarati and Rajput style of architecture. The picturesque courtyards beautify the fort. The amazing architecture inside the fort inspires you. Some of the attractions inside the fort are Anup Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Hawa Mahal, Dungar Mahal, Diwan-e-khas and Ganga Mahal.

Camel Safari in Thar Desert- The ultimate adventure

A thrilling experience travelling through a region known as Thar Desert, which till date remains virtually isolated from the rest of the world. A completely different world altogether waits for you. All over the Desert tour , one encounters typical lifestyles, culture, forts, castles, cuisine, desert safaris, customs, mysteries, stories and experiences.

The Great Indian Desert Thar Desert, the huge unending expanse of burning hot sand is spread over four states in India, namely Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, and two states in Pakistan covering an area of about 446,000 square kilometres. Deriving its name from 'thul' denoting the sand ridges of the region, Thar stands divided between Sindh region in Pakistan and Rajasthan in India.
A tract of rolling sand hills, the Thar Desert is bordered by the irrigated Indus plains to the west, the Aravalli Range to the southeast, the Rann of Kachchh to the south, and the Punjab plain to the north and northeast. Yielding salt and gypsum, the desert is formed due to the scant rainfall received by the region as a result of the dryness of the prevailing monsoon winds.

Receiving an annual average rainfall of less than 10 inches, the desert is a largely a region of shifting sand dunes, broken rocks, and scrub vegetation. The sparsely populated region has a pastoral economy. In May 1974, India exploded its first nuclear device at Pokhran in the deserts of Rajasthan.
The Legend - Thar Desert It is believed that aeons ago, Lord Rama drew an arrow in his bow, targetting Lanka, the island capital where his wife was held captive by the demon king, Ravana. However, such were its destructive powers that the gods pleaded with the Lord to desist from his intended purpose. But the arrow once drawn could not be pulled back and thus Rama pointed the arrow to a far-flung sea. The heat generated by the arrow dried the sea and in its place arose a dry, arid and hot desert.

Archaeological Evidence - Thar Desert
The many excavations of the fossils in the desert have led to the belief that the area was teeming with marine life once upon a time. It is believed that centuries ago, the earliest inhabitants who were a part of an urban civilization that arose 4500 years ago, belonged to this region. Recent excavations of the Indus Valley Civilization reveal that the settlements penetrated deep into the heart of the desert. Archaeologists have found a remarkable resemblance between the citadels and the manner of building along narrow lanes that dissect each other at right angles and more recent settlements.
The Wild In The Arid Land

Stretches of sand in the desert are interspersed by hillocks and sandy and gravel plains. About 23 species of lizards and 25 species of snakes are found here and several of them are endemic to the region. The thinly populated grasslands support the endangered Great Indian Bustard, the Black Buck, the Chikara (gazelle), and some feathered game, notably the Francolin and Quail. Among the migratory birds, Sand Grouse, Ducks and Geese are common.

The Details The safari crew takes you to the nearby village of Deshnok, famous worldwide for its rat temple. After the "Darshan", that is offering prayers at the temple, the crew heads towards the "Dhani" (a cluster of huts) - Charan. The trip to Deshnok is covered by Jeep. The camels are prepared at dhani for your voyage in deep desert.

The route -
Deshnok - Charan - deep desert - minimum 2 days
Deshnok - Charan - Khinchan(Phalodi) - takes 7 days
Deshnok - Charan - Khinchan(Phalodi) - Jaisalmer - takes 13 days.

History of Bikaner

A Word about the founder

Rao Bikaji was the most enterprising amongst the sons of Rao Jodhaji , the ruler of Mewar.
Realising that a struggle for his paternal inheritance was not likely to bear fruit, the prince was determined to chart out his own destiny.

Rao Bika gathered a force of young warriors who were willing to take on the hazards of the desert. At Deshnoke he sought the blessings of the mystic Karniji , a ‘Charan’ woman held in esteem by the people of this region. Karniji blessed him and also prophesied his victory. Moving to the desert tract of Junglu he took possession of villages abandoned by the Sankhlas and started extending his domain.

In 1488 AD the foundation of the city of Bikaner was laid.

The city of bikaner is encircled by imposing battlements and stands at a slight eminence.

The regal fortified city of Bikaner possesses a time less appeal. An integral part of the Desert Triangle, it still retains much of its medieval charm.

It is said that Rao Bika walked out of the durbar of Jodhpur after having been caught whispering and thus was admonished by his father. He then took of 100 horsemen and 500 foot soldiers and reached the desert tract of Janglu where he took possession of 84 villages abandoned by the Sankhlas and began extending his domain. When he died in 1504 AD his kingdom had extended over 3000 villages. In the 16th century, during emperor Akbar’s regign, the ruler of Bikaner became a close ally of the Mughals and in 1818 AD Maharaja Surat Singh negotiated a treaty with the British and Bikaner become a protectorate of the empire.

Bikaner underwent a transformation under its enlightened ruler- Maharaja Ganga singh ( 1880 -1943 AD). He promoted the Ganga Canal Project which converted large tracts of desert-land inti rich farmland. He also extended the railway lines in the state for easy accessibility.Biakner is well Known for its school of Miniature paintings. The Paintings are a fine blend of the Rajput and Mughal styles.

Founded in 1488, Bikaner is a desert built on an elevation and surrounded by a long embattled wall pierced by five gates. A magnificient fort built betwen 1588 & 1593 by Raja Raj Singh dominates the city.

Sheer beauty in the desert is the royal fortified city of Bikaner. Lying at the northern tip of the famous triangle of the desert cities, Bikaner is a beautiful medival town. The genesis of Bikaner dates back to 1488, when a Rathore prince, Rao Bikaji, son of Rao Jodhaji of Jodhpur, chose a barren wilderness called ’Jangladesh’ and transformed it to a charming city called ’Bikaner’, after the founder’s name. Its location on the ancient caravan routes, which linked Central Asia and North India with the Gujarat seaports, made Bikaner a bustling trade centre in the times of yore.

Bikaner’s Forts, Palaces and Temples - magnificent creations in red and yellow sandstone, are living manifestations of its rich historical and architectural legacy. One can feel the medieval aura pervading the city’s lifestyle. Not only do the traditions come alive here in colourful bazaars and havelis, but Bikaner is also famous for the best riding camels in the world. One can witness gaily caparisoned camels at the spectacular Camel Festival at Bikaner, held annually.
