The Royal Cenotaphs, Devikund Sagar, Bikaner

Devikund Sagar is the cremation ground of Bikaner Royal family. Here stand two groups of Cenotaphs (Chhattris) built in the memory of kings, queens and members of the Bikaner royal family. The earliest cenotaph is of Rao Kalyanmal, the ruler of Bikaner from 1542-71 A.D. and the last cenotaph is of Maharaja Karni Singh (1950-88A.D.) The cenotaphs of the earlier rulers of Bikaner are in Dulmera red stone and the later ones are made of marble. Among these memorials, the cenotaph of Maharaja Anup Singh (1669-98A.D.) is a marvelous piece of art and architecture. It stands on 16 pillars and bears carvings depicting acts of Lord Krishna, floral patterns, peacocks and other birds and animals. The tradition of painting the cenotaphs began with Maharaja Ratan Singh and the same is evident in his cenotaph. Some of the cenotaphs also have epigraphic memorial stones. Cenotaphs (Chhattris) play an important role in Rajput as well as in Muslim art. These Cenotaphs (Chhattris) are finest examples of architectural exuberance and ornamentation in classical Mughal taste.

Ganga Singh Museum

                                                            Ganga Singh

Ganga Singh Museum was founded by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the year 1937. It houses articles of historical importance that go to show that the society was civilized even before the emergence of Harappan civilization. Some of the stunning collections include paintings, pottery, weapons used by Rajputs and a lot more. The paintings on golf leaves are excellent.

Ganga Singh was born on October 3, 1880, the third and youngest son of Maharaja Lal Singh, and brother to Dungar Singh.

Succeeding his brother on December 16, 1888, he was initially educated privately, then at Mayo College, Ajmer from 1889 to 1894. From 1895 to 1898, he was put under the guidance of Thakur Saheb Lall Singh Ji "Churu" for administrative training, learning administrative work from that of Patwari to that of Prime Minister.

For military training, he was sent to Deoli in 1898 and attached to the 42nd Deoli Regiment, which had the reputation of being one of the finest regiments in India under the command of Lt. Col. Bell. During the first World War, he commanded the Bikaner Camel Corps which served in France, Egypt and Palestine.

As a ruler, he established a Chief Court in Bikaner, presided over by a Chief Judge who was assisted by two judges. Bikaner was the first State in Rajasthan to take such a step. He announced the establishment of a Representative Assembly in 1913. He later established a High Court with a Chief Justice and two sub-judges by an edict in 1922. Maharaja Ganga Singhji was the first prince in Rajputana to grant full charter of powers to a high court.

A life insurance and Endowment Assurance Scheme was introduced for the benefit of the employees. Also, facilities of a saving bank were made available to the people. He was one of the first rulers to introduce through legislation a Sharda Act by which child marriages were stopped.

Sadul Singh Museum

                                                Sadul Singh Museum
Sadul Singh Museum is on the first floor of Lalgarh palace. The lives and the passions of the three successive kings of Bikaner are reflected in the art museum. The rare artifacts, Georgian paintings, and the photographs seen here stand proof of the interests and the heroics of the three kings namely Maharaja Ganga Singh, Sadul Singh and Karni Singh.
Lieutenant-General Sir Sadul Singh (7 September 1902 – 25 September 1950) was the last reigning Maharaja of Bikaner from 2 February 1943 to 30 March 1949, continuing as Head of the House of Bikaner and holding the title of Maharaja of Bikaner until his death. The eldest surviving son of General Sir Ganga Singh, Sir Sadul Singh had, for the thirty years leading up to his succession, been serving in many important posts for his father. He had been a Page of Honour at the coronation of King George V and had attended him at the durbar in Delhi. In 1919, Sir Sadul was present at the Paris Peace Conference and attended the 1924 meeting of the League of Nations. He served as Chief Minister of Bikaner from 1920 to 1925 and fought in the Second World War in Persia, the Middle East and Burma. As the time for Indian independence drew near, Sir Sadul was among the first princes to accede to the Dominion of India, which he did on 7 August 1947. On 30 March 1949, Sir Sadul merged Bikaner into the United State of Greater Rajasthan, and died in London a year later, aged 48. His eldest son, Maharaja Dr. Karni Singh became the head of Bikaner throne, holding the title in pretense.

Lalgarh Palace

Lalgarh Palace was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the year 1902 in memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh Ji. The red sandstone construction is a stupendous example of the architectural brilliance of the past. Mughal, Rajput and European architectures blend excellently well. The massive lawns houses peacocks, which are a sight to watch when they dance.

The palace was built between 1902 and 1926 according to Rajput, Mughal and European architectural styles, being largely in the Indo-Saracenic style. The building was commissioned by the British-controlled regency[1] for Maharaja Ganga Singh (1881–1942) while he was still in his minority as they considered the existing Junagarh Palace unsuitable for a modern monarch. Ganga Singh decided that the palace should be named in memory of his father Maharaja Lall Singh.

In 1972, Karni Singh, M.P., the Maharaja of Bikaner, established the Ganga Singhji Charitable Trust. The Maharaja endowed a part of Lallgarh Palace to be used in service of the trust. Two wings were converted into independent hotels with the income from The Lallgarh Palace Hotel, a heritage hotel used to support the trust. Currently, Lallgarh Palace is owned, and the hotel is run, by his daughter Princess Rajyashree Kumari.

Junagarh Fort

                                                              Junagarh Fort

The Junagarh fort is a unique illustration of composite culture. The fort reflects its architecture design; the first of the old one is the Rajput style of the sixteenth century, which was under the impact of the Gujarati and Mughal architectural designs. The rulers of Bikaner were in close association with the Mughal court, as such, they adopted the Mughal decorations, which reflect in the stucco, wall paintings and stone inlay works. The mosaic stone carving and lattice works reflect the Gujarati impact. The works relating to glass, lacquer and wooden ceiling, suggest various activities of the period. The confluence of Rajput, Mughal and the Gujarati architectural designs are clearly visible in Junagarh Fort, as a consequence it is one of the precious gems of Indian architecture. The most important looking and magnificent post medieval building, the Junagarh Fort has the finest lacquer work of rarity, reflecting to glorious past.

The second is the semi-western style of architecture which mostly evolved during the reign of Maharaja Dungar Singh (1872-87). His period marks the disintegration of the old style of architecture.

And third is known as revivalists Rajput architecture which evolved especially during the rule of Maharaja Ganga Singh (1887-1943). This is reflected in the new throne room known as Vikram Vilas built in 1936-37 by Maharaja Ganga Singh. The Maharaja was a great exponent of revivalists Rajput architecture, which is fully reflected in Vikram Vilas. In its grandeur and proportions, the Vikram Vilas is extremely beautiful; and its exquisite craftsmanship and artistic ability are unparalleled.

Junagarh Fort was constructed in the year 1593 by Raja Rai Singh. It is believed that crocodiles were bred in the water moat surrounding the formidable fort. The construction is a fine blend of Mughal, Gujarati and Rajput style of architecture. The picturesque courtyards beautify the fort. The amazing architecture inside the fort inspires you. Some of the attractions inside the fort are Anup Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Hawa Mahal, Dungar Mahal, Diwan-e-khas and Ganga Mahal.
